Mohammed Ali Road

Phil’s friend Kavi Thakrar (founder of Dishoom in London) takes him to some of his favorite street food stops along the famous Mohammed Ali Road. First stop is Surti Handi for some delicious goat stew. Next they go to Zahir Bhai’s Indian Hotel (restaurant), for some chicken roti and brain curry. They then hop across the street for a “Bombay Sandwich”, a hot pressed sandwich piled high with shredded cheese. At night they return for some fresh gulab jamun.

Delhi Darbar

Phil grabs lunch with his friend Nigel Vaz and his son Ethan at their favorite restaurant, Delhi Darbar. They try baby goat, mutton, and the best tandoori chicken Phil has ever had! They finish their meal with Ethan’s favorite dessert, a saffron and pistachio flavored rice pudding.

Trishna

Phil meets up with the #1 food critic in India, Vir Sanghvi, for dinner at one of his favorite restaurants: Trishna. This Szechuan influenced Indian restaurant blends Chinese and Indian flavors together, creating a delicious fusion. Jumbo prawns, calamari, chili garlic lobster, butter garlic crab… these are just a few of the amazing dishes Phil enjoys!

Taj Mahal Palace Hotel

Built in 1903, the beautiful Taj Mahal Palace Hotel provides a perfect place for Phil to enjoy an afternoon Tea. Along with his tea, Phil has a fried potato sandwich, a bun maska, and assorted Indian pastries.

Soam

Chef Chinton Pandya takes Phil for lunch at one of his favorite Mumbai restaurants, Soam. They wet their palates with some fresh mango lassi, before digging into some pani puri. Next up is one of chef Pandya’s favorite dishes from his childhood; Panki (a batter of chickpea flour, cooked between two banana leaves).

Agastya International Foundation

Phil meets back up with Nigel Vaz to visit a school working with the Agastya International Foundation. This organization supplements school programming, adding science and art education programs to generate more hands-on learning experiences for children. Consider learning more about them, and making a donation!

Bombay Canteen

Phil stops by Bombay Canteen for lunch, which was co-founded by his friend Floyd Cardoz. Sadly, Floyd passed away in 2020 due to COVID-19, so Phil meets some of his friends and associates to share a toast in his honor. While Floyd’s presence is sorely missed, Chef Hussain Shahzad elevates the vibrant flavors of Indian food with his elegant menu.

FUN FACT!

Mumbai was once known as Bombay. This prior name originated from when the British controlled the city in the 17th century and was the anglicized version of the Portuguese name Bombaim, which means good bay.
