Modern Pastry Shop

For his first stop in Boston, Phil meets up with restaurateurs Frank Depasquale and Nick Varano at the popular Modern Pastry Shop. They try some remarkable cannolis!

The Galley Diner

Phil heads to south boston for breakfast at Galley Diner. This place has been serving customers since the 40s, and is an institution among the local dockworker community. Sitting at the counter with Bostonians, Phil starts off with a hearty plate of delicious corned beef hash. Make sure you try the Eggs Dutchess, it’s like eggs benedict but with cornbread instead of an english muffin.

Boston Public Market

For lunch Phil stops by Boston Public Market to have some bites from several vendors. First he tries some lamb at Mo’Rockin Fusion. Then he grabs a scoop of ice cream at Crescent Ridge before a freshly fried apple cider donut from Red Apple Farm. This is a great place to try a little bit of everything!

Sarma

Phil Meets up with Jenny Johnson at one of his favorite Boston restaurants, Sarma. Chef Cassie Piuma’s Middle Eastern restaurant serves small plates or mezze with some big flavor. You’ll want to order a lot of different things to share, but some of Phil’s favorites include the pumpkin fritters and the lamb kofte sliders.

Bricco

Phil meets back up with Frank Depasquale for lunch at his salumeria, Bricco Salumeria. He enjoys their signature sandwich, sliced prosciutto and mozzarella on a freshly baked italian roll.

Sly Fox Den Too

Phil takes a little road trip for breakfast with chef Sherry Pocknett at her restaurant Sly Fox Den Too. Chef Pocknett is the first indigenous woman chef to win a James Beard award, and the food at Sly Fox Den is not only innovative, it’s undeniably delicious. The sly fox benedict (a corn cake with homemade venison sausage), striped bass hash with farm fresh eggs, and corn chowder with smoked mussels. Unfortunately Sly Fox Den Too has closed, but check their website for updates regarding their new location.

Al Forno

On his way back to Boston, Phil takes Sherry Pocknett to the Providence restaurant Al Forno. Executive chef David Reynoso serves them wood grilled pizza topped with pumpkin, super thin and super tasty. Sherry says it’s the best pizza she’s ever had! Pro tip: make sure to order their off-menu “dirty steak”, a ribeye steak grilled directly on hot coals.

Esplanade Association

Phil meets up with Jen Mergel (the director of the Esplanade Association) and other volunteers to help clean up the Charles River Esplanade. Jen and the Esplanade Association help keep this landmark lake as beautiful as it can be. If you’d like to learn more or make a donation, check out their website!

Verveine Bakery

Phil treats the Esplanade Association volunteers to some treats from Verveine bakery. They try a blueberry focaccia, an ube brownie, and some delicious gluten free cookies.

Comfort Kitchen

Phil has dinner with Nia Grace, the co-founder of the Boston Black Hospitality Coalition, at Comfort Kitchen. They specialize in global comfort food, and draw inspiration from the spice trade between West Africa and South Asia. With an exciting cocktail program and a uniquely vibrant menu, make sure to add Comfort Kitchen to your Boston list. Phil highly recommends you get the duck!

Quincy Market

Phil takes a stroll inside of Quincy Market, where he is drawn in for a slice of pizza at Regina Pizzeria. This 100 year old pizzeria is one of many delicious options inside the market. A great place to walk around and grab a bite to eat, make sure you check out this historic market.

Toscanini’s

Phil meets up with a local family for some ice cream at Toscanini’s. Gus Rancatore opened Toscanini’s in 1981, and he incorporates flavors from countries all around the world. If you’re not feeling adventurous, their standard ice cream flavors are also delicious!

Neptune Oyster

Phil joins his friend Rick Marotta for some seafood at Neptune Oyster. They start off with a glorious seafood tower; oysters, clams, crab and lobster piled high. After the tower, they enjoy a couple of buttery lobster rolls and seasonal Nantucket Bay scallops in chimichurri. Come in between November and March to try these scallops, you won’t be sorry.

La Royal

Before leaving Phil meets up with all his Boston friends for a reunion meal at La Royal, a Peruvian restaurant run by husband and wife team JuanMa Calderon and Maria Rondeau. They share an assortment of classic Peruvian dishes, but the real showstopper is the lamb shank. Phil says it’s one of the best he’s ever had!
