Tartine

Phil joins his friend Kenji Lopez-Alt for breakfast at the world famous Tartine bakery. They enjoy Phil’s favorite chocolate croissant, strawberry and caramel bread pudding, and a chocolate eclair, all served by Liz Pruett herself. If you’ve never been, you owe it to yourself to make a trip to Tartine.

Dynamo Donuts

Kenji takes Phil on a tour of some of his favorite local spots, and starts off with a stop at Dynamo Donuts for a maple bacon donut. As Phil says, “every walk is made better with a donut”.

La Torta Gorda

The next stop on his eating tour, Phil stops at La Torta Gorda for… you guessed it, a torta. Chef Armando Macuil has been cooking authentic Mexican food here since the early 2000s, but as you might expect, the main attraction is the torta. Phil tackles a monster torta piled high with pulled pork, milanesa, chorizo, turkey, ham, refried beans, avocado, onions, queso fresco, and american cheese. Phil says it’s a must go destination!

Swan Oyster Depot

Phil has lunch with his longtime friend Mark Nassar at the San Francisco institution, Swan Oyster Depot. Open for over 100 years, it was founded by four danish brothers, the Laustens. Still family operated, Swan Oyster Depot boasts some of the freshest seafood you can get anywhere, and people line up down the block to grab a bite. They enjoy oysters on the half shell, dungeness crab, “Sicilian” sashimi, and delicious smoked salmon.

Bob’s Donuts

While walking after his seafood lunch, Phil can’t help himself when he passes the beautiful donut display in the window of Bob’s Donuts. He has to taste an apple fritter and a chocolate frosted donut.

Petit Crenn

Phil joins one of the best chefs in America, Dominique Crenn, for a meal at her casual dining restaurant, Petit Crenne. Opened in 2015, the seafood/vegetable menu features dishes that chef Crenn grew up with. They start with a comté cheese gougére topped with a pickled shallot gel, followed by a Santa Barbara uni custard topped with caviar, a plate of prepared late season tomatoes, and a beautiful pea centered dish.

Boulette’s Larder

Phil meets the legendary Alice Waters for breakfast at Boulette’s Larder. They begin with a gorgeous fruit salad, and then move on to fresh local sardines, and scrambled eggs with buffalo stracciatella cheese and wilted summer squash. Located inside the Ferry Building, this is a lovely place to have a meal before touring The Ferry Building’s farmers market!

The Ferry Building

Alice Waters takes Phil on a tour of his favorite farmer’s market in San Francisco. They take a walk around the market, sampling the beautiful produce and food from the vendors. Cal Red peaches, perfect tomatoes, chilaquiles, and a perfect porchetta sandwich.

Brown Sugar Kitchen

The last stop on the tour, Alice Waters takes Phil to a popup of Brown Sugar Kitchen by chef Tanya Holland. Located in Oakland, Brown Sugar Kitchen features chef Holland’s interpretation of soul food. Phil and Alice share a plate of fried chicken and waffles, and Phil describes it as “the waffle of my life”.

The French Laundry

Phil takes a trip to meets up with his friend, the great Thomas Keller, for a meal and a tour of The French Laundry. One of the best restaurants in the world, Phil gets to eat in the kitchen with chef Keller personally preparing his food for him. They start with one of their most famous dishes, Oysters and Pearls. But shockingly, Phil learns that Thomas has never tried the dish in its entirety. Phil convinces him to take a bite, and thankfully, he isn’t disappointed.

Bouchon

Next up is Thomas Keller’s more casual dining spot, Bouchon. Thomas Keller describes Bouchon as a place that the kitchen staff at The French Laundry can go to eat after their dinner service. Phil enjoys a perfect Steak Frites.

Bouchon Bakery

After a meal at Bouchon, there’s no better place to grab dessert than Bouchon Bakery. Phil learns how to make a “fuhgeddaboudit”, a gourmet candy bar like rice crispy treat, topped with a caramel layer, coated with chocolate, and sprinkled with fleur de sel. Phil also gets to try their version of a peanut butter cup, macaroons, and their “Oh-Oh”.

Chef Keller takes Phil to his family-style dining restaurant Ad Hoc for some incredible fried chicken. Forget Colonel Sanders!
